Better Late Than Never, Dead Klansman Edition

Posted in Memory by Andy Hall on September 15, 2019

It seems that klansman, League of the South stalwart, and Confederate Heritage™ figure Steven Monk has gone to his reward. Now that he’s departed, the “heritage” folks are denouncing Monk as having been “eat up with hatred and racism.” While there’s a better-late-than-never angle to this, it’s also worth remembering that these same people weren’t nearly so fastidious about Monk’s views and affiliations while he was alive and useful to their purposes.

Hmm . . . I see the question above as pending moderation, but not the longer substantive post I made about neo-Confederates in West Virginia.

I don’t see any longer, substantive comment from you at all. I’m not aware of changes made by WordPress, but they implement minor tweaks all the time.

It is very interesting to see some of those comments. It is even more interesting to see some people continuing to support trash like Monk which makes them trash by extension. Of course, it keeps tying right back to their modern ideology and is not about the past at all.

Bearden is congratulating himself on having “outted” a dead man. He and Susan Hathaway — who now goes online as “Susan Lee” — should probably explain why they didn’t have a problem with him before now.

The lunatic fringe can come in many flavors. I googled information on Mr Slidell and Mr Benjamin and found this weird link:

    [link redacted by AH]

An anti-semite who lauds Lincoln and excoriates the Confederates. He would call Mr Monk a Jew Lover.

Wow, that’s stomach-churning. Sorry, I’m not comfortable leaving that link, but I suppose it’s important to know those people exist.

I’m going to go scrub down with lye soap now.

Actually I was hoping you’d redact it. I should have written “For Your Eyes Only” next to it. I of course admire Lincoln, consider Judah Benjamin to have been an evil genius and Mr Slidell to have been a prize fool. Lincoln was wise to send him on to Europe.
