I watched a National Geographic documentary about the Hunley last night. It is a truly fascinating subject, and I didn’t realize the connection to Shiloh through Lt. Dixon before seeing the documentary.
It is also amazing how the researchers resolved the sinking question through careful documentation and rigorous scientific research.
There are lots of interesting connections like that. George Dixon’s former CO in the 21st Alabama Infantry is a neighbor of mine, in a cemetery near my home.

This is what makes history so much better than family tales and mythology. These things actually happened and can be documented.
I’m not very far from Shiloh, so I’ll probably make a trip up there when the weather improves.
I don’t have much to add, except (a) this is very cool and (b) museum conservators totally rock.
