I followed up with some digging on Rice’s later life in this comment to that thread. Don’t know much about Rice’s service record. He enlisted late in the war and (as I recall) this letter was written from a military hospital where he was ill for an extended period. His service record had not been digitized last time I checked.
Be nice to know more about that USCT soldier writing the slaveholder, such as who was he writing and where?
Dick, thanks for commenting. The letter is from Spotswood Rice (c. 1825 -1885), a member of the 67th USCT in Missouri, writing to Kitty Diggs.
